Medicus Mundi Switzerland/ SEXUAL HEALTH SWITZERLAND Globally, nearly half of all pregnancies are unintended, a startling 121 million each year throughout the world. This is an unseen crisis unfolding right before our eyes. It is an unbearable cost to individuals and the world. One in two pregnancies take place in the bodies of people who did not affirmatively choose pregnancy or motherhood, who were not open to the prospect of having a child at that time, with that partner, in those circumstances. For these women, the most life-altering reproductive choice—whether to become pregnant or not–is no choice at all. This is a personal issue, a health issue, a human rights issue, a development issue and a humanitarian issue.
This year’s State of World Population report brings together the latest evidence on unintended pregnancy and its impact on societies, countries and global development overall. The report explores the real-world conditions that are linked to unintended pregnancies, including poverty, lower levels of education attainment and labour force participation, and exposure to violence and coercion.
SEXUAL HEALTH SWITZERLAND and Medicus Mundi Switzerland are proud to host this year's launch of UNFPA’s State of World Population report in Switzerland.
