At this year’s European Conference on Tropical Medicine and International Health (ECTMIH) in Basel, the Network Medicus Mundi Switzerland in cooperation with its members Swiss Red Cross and SolidarMed will organise a side event on “Swiss Health NGOs for Implementation Research”. This Round Table will sharpen our perspective on the issue and will be an opportunity for more MMS member organisations to involve.

There is a strong call within the international health cooperation to transform evidence based research into policy and action. Implementation research is often driven by the scientific community. How can NGOs strengthen applied research in their projects and programmes? What is the potential of embedding implementation research in their programmes?
To strengthen implementation research within NGO programmes, there is a need for building up research skills and capacities within the organisations and for training programmes for NGO staff both at Headquarter and field level. Moreover, it is a challenge for many NGOs to find the necessary financial means. Implementation research should be stronger supported by donors. Among other ideas, we are thinking about creating an exchange platform for implementation health research in Switzerland.
