Inspired by this philosophy, Swiss AIDS pioneer Prof. Ruedi Lüthy travelled to Zimbabwe in southern Africa. Around 1.3 million people are HIV-positive, and many of them urgently need life-saving treatment. Working under difficult conditions, he set up an outpatient clinic and a training centre in the capital, Harare. With great success: Newlands Clinic now provides comprehensive care for more than 7,000 patients. In the training centre, to date Ruedi Lüthy and his local team have trained over 7,000 care workers and doctors in the management of HIV. Newlands Clinic also conducts its own research and participates in international studies related to HIV to improve patient management and to share their knowledge.
