Around 15% of the world’s population, or one billion people, live with some form of disability, 80% of them in middle and low-income countries. As the population ages, the number of people living with disabilities will continue to increase globally in the coming decades. Globally, people with disabilities face disproportionate levels of poverty, discrimination and social exclusion, a situation that international agreements aim to address. The majority of states have committed to upholding and implementing the rights of persons with disabilities through their equal participation in all areas of life by promoting inclusion in international cooperation. This issue of the Bulletin deals with the current status in this process and highlights the challenges that still exist, even so in Switzerland.
