"Health-related Sustainable Development Goals won’t be met unless global, regional and country efforts are intensified, WHO Director General Dr Tedros (...) declared yesterday. “Progress is slow, we are not on schedule – we are behind schedule,” said Dr Tedros, speaking before the WHO Executive Board (EB) in a 27 January session on progress in health-related SDGs. But he expressed hopes that a WHO-led Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well Being For All, could help get progress back on track." (Photo: United Nations Photo/flickr, CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

Federal Office of Public Health/ MMS In fragile contexts, armed conflicts and emergencies the access to health services is restricted for the population. In these situations health systems are very much limited and in some cases no longer functional. For avoiding a complete breakdown and strengthening the health system in the medium-term it is key to address the nexus between humanitarian aid and international cooperation. For addressing this issue Switzerland and Afghanistan have launched a Call to Action on Universal Health Care in Emergencies. The Round Table organised jointly by the Federal Office of Public Health and the Network Medicus Mundi Switzerland will foster the dialogue between Swiss organisations working in the field of international health cooperation and those parts of the administration dealing with global health issues, humanitarian aid and international cooperation. Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) 2019 has specific significance for the tropical medicine community, as it will mark the 25th anniversary of FESTMIH, of which RSTMH is a proud member. This will form a great opportunity to reflect on how much progress has been made in the last quarter of a century in terms of investigation, innovation and implementation, and is a chance to consider what we can expect from the next 25 years for tropical medicine and global health. The challenges of these enormous fields of work continue to test us and an ever-wider network of scientists and professionals is needed to tackle the risks to human health, as well as the interactions between human and animal health, the environment, population movement, and economic, social and political change.
