Cost-Effective Development of Love Land by Using the LEAN Startup Feedback Loop

Von Karin Stierlin

The Taboobreaker Association, founded by Karin Stierlin, has embarked on an innovative journey to develop "Love Land", a gamified multi-channel platform aimed at enhancing the mental and sexual health of young people. This development is grounded in the principles of the LEAN Startup methodology, emphasizing cost-efficiency, minimal waste, and user-driven design.

Understanding the LEAN Concept

LEAN is a methodology that aims to create more value for customers with fewer resources. It involves a continuous process of building, measuring, and learning with the goal of minimizing waste and maximizing the effectiveness of resources used. In the context of Love Land, this approach translates into a systematic, iterative process where each development phase is carefully evaluated based on user feedback to ensure alignment with the needs and preferences of the target audience.

The LEAN Startup Feedback Loop is used as a core concept since any early beginning of a product, emphasizing the iterative process of building, measuring, and learning. Based on this analysis, initiators learn and decide whether to persevere, pivot, or stop, and then iterate on the product based on these learnings. This cycle helps to align closely with customer needs and market demands, efficiently using resources and enhancing their chances of success.

The Development Cycle of Love Land based on the Feedback Loop of LEAN Startup

The development cycle of Love Land, guided by the LEAN Startup’s feedback loop, is an ongoing process that dynamically evolves through each phase of building, measuring, learning, and iterating. This process is designed to continuously refine and enhance the app. Looking forward, the Taboobreaker Association aims to keep aligning the app with emerging educational needs and technological advancements, ensuring that Love Land remains at the forefront of educational innovations in mental and sexual health for youths:

  1. Idea Generation based on experience
Love Land's initial concept emerged from the need to provide engaging educational content in mental and sexual health tailored for young individuals. The idea to develop a mobile Love Land app evolved from the initial board game, Love Land, which had been successfully tested in various countries with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. This demonstrated potential for scalability.

  2. Minimal Viable Product (MVP) Development
A playable MVP of Love Land was created using PowerPoint to shape the key assumptions about the product and to figure out the cheapest and fastest way to test these assumptions. This MVP for Love Land was a simple, playable prototype, focusing on basic functionalities and core content to gather early feedback from both, young people and adults.

  3. Coding and feedback of MVP
Following the MVP, an initial simple App version, was coded. This step involved coding a single island for initial testing to keep the scope limited and manageable. Feedback was actively solicited from teenagers living in underprivileged areas in Zimbabwe and South Africa. This feedback highlighted desires for more engaging and adventurous elements, leading to iterative enhancements such as the inclusion of more dynamic game design elements like enemies and adventure logs for knowledge retention, and the simplification of learning content.

  4. Data analysis and learning
The feedback such as "More fun needed," "Add more adventure," and "Make learning less overt and more integrated into gameplay" was collected. This data was then analysed to understand user preferences and behaviours deeply and highlighting a desire for:
  • more engaging and interactive elements
  • more mature non-playing characters and avatars
  • the inclusion of dynamic game design features like enemies, adventure logs
  • mechanisms for knowledge retention.

These insights informed the next steps in the next development process and feedback loop Nr 2, emphasizing the importance of keeping the end-user—youth—at the centre of development.

Further Key Components for Cost Management and Resource Utilization

Emphasizing the LEAN principle of using resources judiciously, Love Land’s development avoided expensive game design agencies and instead partnered with smaller, more agile teams that showed interest in a social impact innovation. The strategic partnership with academic institutions like the University of Cape Town provided access to pro bono scientific support and evaluation, further reducing costs while enhancing the product’s educational value. These partnerships facilitated a blend of academic rigour and practical application, ensuring that the content was both scientifically sound and appealing to young users.

Scaling and Expansion of Love Land

With the foundational game elements tested and refined through multiple feedback loops, Love Land expanded its features and content. The addition of new islands and game levels was guided by continuous user feedback, ensuring relevance and engagement.

Website: Providing access to additional learning content
An integral component of the Love Land initiative has been the development of a comprehensive website that extends the learning environment beyond the app. The website features tutorial videos that provide detailed guidance on mental and sexual health topics, designed to support both learners and educators. These resources are crafted to complement the interactive lessons within the app, providing a richer, more integrated learning experience.

“Based on feedback loops, Taboobreaker developed a Train-the-Trainer program to include adults in mental and sexual health education.”

Inclusion of adults into mental and sexual health education
Recognizing the importance of adult facilitators in the education of mental and sexual health, Taboobreaker has also developed a Train-the-Trainer program. This program is designed to equip educators, parents, and community leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively use Love Land as a teaching tool. Alongside the hands-on trai ning, the program provides a box of educational materials that trainers can use to supplement their sessions. These materials are designed to complement the digital content, offering additional depth and context to the lessons imparted through the app as well as strategies for engaging young people and facilitating discussions on sensitive topics.

Impact and Future Directions

The iterative development process, rooted in LEAN principles, has allowed Love Land to evolve into a robust platform that not only educates but also engages its users in an immersive learning environment. The ongoing feedback loops continue to inform enhancements, making Love Land a pertinent example of how agile methodologies can be effectively applied in non-profit educational projects.

An Initiative which is Making a Lasting Difference

Love Land's development showcases the effectiveness of the LEAN startup approach in the non-profit sector, particularly in educational technology. By focusing on minimal viable products, continuous user feedback, and cost-effective resource use, projects like Love Land can achieve substantial impact while remaining financially sustainable. This model not only enhances the scalability of such initiatives but also ensures they remain aligned with the evolving needs of their target audiences, making a lasting difference in the lives of young people.
